Hall Hunter, a leading UK grower of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, is a family business located in Berkshire and Surrey. Their aim is to grow the best quality soft fruit available in the UK. They have worked with some of the biggest game-players in the field including Waitrose, M&S, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and the Coop and marketed through Farm Fresh P.O. Ltd. They approached Deployflow to help them move their legacy system to the Cloud to improve system agility and deliver a more sustainable system structure.
The client’s business foundation was legacy on premises which created a number of challenges — their support team used to receive numerous tickets and try to find the right solutions to the problems that emerged, but most of those efforts ended up in frequent fire-fighting. Essentially, the client did not have a core team who would oversee, maintain and update the infrastructure causing the team to struggle with the issues as they emerge on the fly. Many components of the environment were highly outdated, lacking well-structured documentation. On top of this, before they approached us, they used to work with a number of suppliers which integrated their solutions causing a huge cost, security issues and instability of their existing network with many data lakes created out of organization leading to cost overrun.
Deploflow team didn’t have the right amount of documentation nor a reliable source of information who would guide them on this journey, This required the team to do a really deep-dive analysis of all the items and components which took much of their time trying to clearly understand and get a bigger picture of what kind of solution they can build and help the client succeed on this journey. The team of experts also had to gain insight into the frequent users’ issues and create a strategy on how to tackle them and remove any future potential problems and ultimately improve customer experience. On top of this, we advised the client on which type of Cloud they should move to making sure that the chosen Cloud solution perfectly suits their infrastructure and unique business needs.
Through the synergy of our experts’ deep knowledge and domain expertise, we managed to build a well-documented system, use Obashi framework for a number of items, do different infrastructure updates while constantly making sure we reuse the client’s existing equipment and do small upgrades where necessary. We upgraded the hardware which extended the device’s lifecycle without having to completely replace it. In other words, we wanted to make sure we build a cost-effective solution ensuring that the client does not spend much of their resources on replacing everything. We mostly focused on moving their infrastructure to the Cloud. Currently, we are working on the process of decommissioning on premise services — we are migrating their business reports which are currently on premise and we are moving them to the Cloud making the items secure and fully protected in case of unplanned bad scenarios. Also, since the client had a few compliance requirements, we focused our efforts on making sure that the information is saved on the location.
This is the first step on this cloud-migration journey and we are yet to embark on continuously managing the infrastructure and providing support to key items. Also, the client was partially using Office 365, and we have mostly taken the advantage of their systems and services to make them a more reliable service provider.
What was on Hall Hunter’s updated “must have list” for this environment? Well-organized documentation, higher security, reduced costs, greater flexibility, staying up to date with the latest technology. Following a detailed migration plan, the Deployflow team was able to complete the migration on time and on budget helping Hall Hunter save around 30 percent of IT costs and reduce tickets. The client is already reaping the rewards of their new cloud-based system in terms of cost saving, clear documentation, well-organized data anyone can easily access, enhanced security, flexibility and beyond.
